BALL MOSS - Ball Moss is not a Parasite, it is an Epiphyte. It first occurs as small
grey-green tufts. It's composed of many individual plants that develop into a ball.
These "balls" kill by suffocation and deprivation of sunlight. It takes nothing from the
tree (Click on picture to view ball moss).
THE TREES
WEBWORMS
Webworms are known for the large unsightly webs they produce. The feeding
preferences of webworms vary from one place to another. In our area, Pecans are
a favorite. Infestations that occur repeatedly over several years can cause stress to
the tree and make it more susceptible to drought and disease or other insect pest
which can be fatal (Click on picture to view webworms).
OAK LEAF ROLLERS
BALL MOSS
When oak leaf rollers are dislodged, they will hang from silky threads. Walking
through these dangling caterpillars can be a nuisance. Residents will often
abandon their patios to avoid them.
When a tree is defoliated during the growing season, it becomes stressed and
occasionally serious damage can occur. Once this happens, the tree will stop
manufacturing sugar, which slows down the growth of the tree.
